JOB seekers swarmed the Resorts World Sentosa's (RWS) booth at Singapore's largest career and education fair yesterday, all wanting one of 2,000 remaining jobs up for grabs.

Career and Training 2010: Education 2010 was officially opened yesterday by Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment and Water Resources, and will run till Sunday.

Exhibitors include universities, polytechnics, training providers and private and public sector companies. They are jointly offering more than 5,500 jobs and 35,000 places in academic courses.

Two-thirds of the jobs on offer at RWS are for the casino and the adjoining Universal Studios theme park, while the others are in areas such as food and beverage, facilities management, security and transport.

Also at the exhibition is the Marina Bay Sands resort, which has 500 jobs on offer. A spokesman said this would be the last hiring burst before the resort opens on April 27, but did not have the number of applicants so far.

Mr Radie Joseph Jose, 24, was at both booths yesterday. He is hoping to move into the hotel management field from his current job in customer service.

The fair also features a Silver Talent Pavilion that offers job opportunities for those aged 45 and above, and holds on-the-spot interviews for landscaping, security and construction work.

The exhibition, organised jointly by the Singapore Professional Centre and IIR Exhibitions and supported by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), has an added focus on skills training this year.

In her opening address, Dr Khor encouraged visitors to sign up for the training programmes, adding that those offered were generally eligible for government funding.

She said the number of job seekers seeking assistance in the South West District, where she is mayor, had declined 44 per cent from January last year to January this year, but that it did not mean continuing education and training was no longer relevant.

'Skills obsolescence is a real threat and our only solution is to upgrade our skills and maintain our relevance in the economy,' she said.

The exhibition is in Halls 601 to 603 of Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre, and is open from 11am to 8pm.

RWS had significantly more people at their booth than the Marina Bay Sands resort. I wonder why. But maybe it's because RWS had 2,000 jobs to offer whereas there's only 500 for MBS.
