JOBS are now chasing workers, in a market that has rebounded robustly to pre-recession levels.

In the first three months of this year, there were 139 job openings for every 100 job seekers - a figure not seen since December 2007, just before the economy went south.

This is up from 104 job openings for every 100 job seekers seen from October to December last year, the Manpower Ministry noted in its latest quarterly labour market report, released yesterday.
The report said there were 49,300 job vacancies in March, a substantial 32 per cent increase over the year.

MY GENERATION, Gen Y, is not notably associated with commitment. Rather, we have been called isolated, apathetic, disengaged, spoilt, narcissistic or the 'maid' generation - a reference to the soldier who got a domestic helper to carry his field pack. In short, we are the ones with an inflated sense of entitlement.

Then a 27-year-old comes along, unveiled as the People's Action Party's (PAP) youngest candidate in almost four decades. Never mind that Ms Tin Pei Ling has been a grassroots leader for the past six years and sits on the executive committee of Young PAP, the party's youth wing.

Netizens quickly lynched her, beginning with her Facebook and Twitter accounts. Her 'act cute' pictures were flamed. Her now infamous picture with a Kate Spade box, complete with a kawaii smile and fingers forming a victory sign, has appeared on my Twitter account at least half a dozen times.

With the economic recovery, the Class of 2010 from the three local universities is reporting higher employment rates and better starting salaries compared to graduates from the year before.

In particular, graduates from the Singapore Management University (SMU) last year had a record employment rate of 99.9 per cent and higher starting salaries across five of the university's degree programmes, surpassing the performance of graduates in 2009, when 96.8 per cent found employment.

At the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), about 90 per cent found jobs within six months.
