Mann A18: The Mannly Android Smartphone

Mann A18
Mann up with the Mann A18, the manliest Android smartphone ever created! Designed to withstand whatever nature has to throw your way, the smartphone is waterproof, dustproof and shockproof.
Thrill-seekers, avid adventurers, Bear Grylls or simply the hyper-accident-proners, this phone is specifically for you! The Mann A18 is IP68 waterproof rated, which means that it can be immersed in water 2 meters deep for up to 30 minutes without springing a leak.

I can’t help but think that perhaps the manufacturers produced this with me in mind. Lord knows how much my iPhone 4S had suffered. God rest its soul. It has slipped through my butter fingers countless times, been thrown about recklessly because of my laziness to walk to place it in the intended position, and even dropped into a toilet bowl at a prata shop! True story. I swear upon all prata shops in Singapore. I was in a prata shop’s toilet, and before I got the chance to take a piss, it slipped out from my back pocket and went “PLOP” and “GLURGH GLURGH GLURGH” into the vivid yellow liquid in the toilet bowl. I stood there just staring at my phone drowning and seeing the bubbles rise up from it in horror for quite awhile. After I recovered from being flabbergasted, I held back my bile and reached into the urine THAT WAS NOT EVEN MINE and fished it out. I proceeded to rinse it in water and placed it in a box of rice for a few days. When it emerged from the rice, it was never the same again.

What the Mann A18 makes up for durability, loses on cutting edge technology. The phone contains a 1.15GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core CPU, an Adreno 203 GPU, just 4GB of on-board memory, and a 5 megapixel camera (though the case clearly says “8.0 MP” – due to interpolation). The front-facing camera is a miserable 0.3 megapixels, so it’s obviously not a phone for narcissists. Memory is upgradeable via a MicroSD slot.
The phone comes pre-loaded with Android 4.0.4, and with a 4-inch capacitive-touch display, it isn’t exactly hi-definition, at just 800×480 resolution. Good news for international customers is that it is not locked to any specific carrier, though it only supports GSM 2G, WCDMA 3G connectivity and Wi-Fi.
Even though it might not be the best smartphone out there performance wise, it is still a great choice if you are the outdoorsy type or if you have the tendency to turn whatever tech you touch into dust, like me.
It retails at Chinavasion at an affordable price of USD$257.20 (SGD$328.98) excluding shipping and is available in either solid black or black with orange accents.
