No one is wrong when it comes to what they find matters most to them in life, so which of the six characters would you most agree with?
At one point of time, we have all pondered about the meaning of life and what we want to gain out of it. Some of us find that life is worth living in the company of loved ones, and others in striving to achieve your all. Since all of us are unique individuals, we all have a myriad of opinions as to what life can really offer us. An extraordinary clash of events brought six very different animals together and they each tell their take on life.
The Search for Life's Greatest Treasure
Ramondo the rabbit works as a chief waiter at a very classy 3-star Michelin restaurant. Everyday when he gets up, he can't wait to start his shift at the restaurant. He enjoys the fast-paced, challenging aspect of his job. Not only is he more than willing to go out of his way to meet the needs of the restaurant's patrons, he likes taking charge of his team of very efficient waiters.
One day, Ramondo woke up expecting his day to go as smoothly as other days, but little did he know that he would be in for quite a surprise! He happily commuted to the restaurant and carried about his duties, attending to the customers and organizing his team. A customer called him over and requested for a bottle of champagne, with his customary smile, Ramondo nodded politely and told the customer that he would be back in a jiffy with the bottle.
Ramondo bustled down to the wine cellar in the basement of the 2-storey French restaurant. He flung open the cellar's door only to find a cat frozen in fear staring back at him.
Ramondo stared at the cat, and the cat stared back. The cat was wearing a black mask across her eyes, and was clutching onto a crate of wine bottles.
Finally Ramondo plucked up the courage and asked cautiously, “Who are you, and what are you doing in my restaurant's cellar? Do you know that this room is only restricted to the staff?”
The cat whipped herself out of her frozen stupor. “They call me Cathy the cat burglar, and stealing is my game. Get out of my way or I will rip you into shreds with these claws.” With that, Cathy extracted her claws and hissed menacingly at Ramondo.
Trepidation flooded Ramondo. He took a step back, quickly ran out of the cellar and slammed the door shut behind him. He knew that this door was the only way out and as long as he kept it shut tight, Cathy would not be able to escape. He reached into his pocket for his cellphone and called the police. The police told him that they would dispatch their detective along with a few other officers. Ramondo hung up the phone feeling slightly relieved.
Suddenly, the cellar's door banged and trembled. Ramondo who had his back pressed against it the whole time was startled. Then came yowling and screaming from inside.
“PLEASE LET ME OUT, PLEASE. I will put everything back to where it belongs,” Cathy shrieked. “I can't go to jail! I have five starving kittens to feed!”
Ramondo just kept silent while Cathy howled and cried. After what seemed like an eternity to the rabbit, the police finally arrived. The detective who was spearheading the team introduced himself as Felix the fox. Ramondo told him everything that transpired, and the brave detective swung open the cellar door.
Cathy was sitting curled up in a corner with tears streaming down her face.
“I'm sorry,” Cathy apologized. “I don't mean to steal, but ever since my husband died, I have been unemployed. No one wants to hire me with my limited qualifications, and I have to feed my children. So I resorted to stealing things and selling them off in the black market.”
“You do the crime, you pay the time.” Felix said and walked towards her.
Before the fox detective could slap on the handcuffs, a small voice piped up, “Wait please.”
Everyone turned to see who spoke. And behind them, a small crowd of the restaurant's customers had already gathered to see what the commotion was about. It was a little koala bear that spoke.
“Hi, I am Kiky,” the koala said timidly. “Miss Cat, is what you say true?”
Cathy nodded sadly and brushed the tears off her face.
“In that case,” Kiky spoke up a little more boldly with a hint of fierce determination in her voice. “Police, I think that there is no need for the arrest. I am a customer at this restaurant and I will pay for everything this cat tried to take.”
“WHAT?! IMPOSSIBLE. THE LAW IS THE LAW AND I HAVE TO ENFORCE THE LAW!” Felix shouted at Kiky.
The koala flinched slightly at the harsh tone but maintained her stance. “I ask everyone of you here, including you Mr. Detective, what matters most in your life?”
The room fell silent. So Kiky continued, “I lead my life helping others. I derive so much happiness out of lending a helping hand. It is something that money cannot buy. I believe my prime purpose in this life is to lighten the burden of another. What we do for ourselves dies with us. But what we do for others and the world is immortal.”
Ramondo who had been quiet this whole time suddenly spoke up, “ Well... I... I believe in serving others too, which is why I love my job. I love seeing the satisfaction on my customers' faces, it makes me happy. But what matters to me most in life is a little bit different. I believe in being the best that I can, my life only has meaning if I reach out and strive for my goals, to move ahead, and to go up and to achieve and to conquer.”
“I'm Ellie, and I'm a musician,” a little elephant said. She is another one of the restaurant's customers who was standing by the sidelines observing everything that was going on until just now. “I live for the little things in life; the way flowers turn their heads up to the sun, the gentle breeze blowing in one's hair, the sweet chime a single note makes from a musical instrument, and the sparkle of the stars in the night sky.”
“I see immense beauty in the smallest of things that some people might find insignificant. Such as the beauty of a mother's unconditional love for her children,” Ellie gestured at Cathy.
“Please, if you could find it in your hearts to forgive me,” Cathy softly addressed the crowd. “My children are everything to me. I live for their smiles, their laughter, their hugs and their happiness. My family is my life's treasure and I would like to see those little gems of mine shining bright. I want to give them everything I never had, especially a good education.”
“I know this is not the way to go about doing so, but I am at my wit's end,” Cathy continued. “Miss Kiky, to answer your question, the people closest to me is what makes my world go round, they are what makes my life worth living for. My family and my friends are the center of life's meaning.”
Detective Felix sighed in defeat. “Oh well, it seems that there is no crime here since you are a guest of Miss Kiky's, and everything here is simply a misunderstanding, or at least that is what I will tell my superiors” he winked at Cathy. “I too have children and they mean everything to me, so I can sympathize with your predicament. Don't let my steely exterior fool you, there is more to me than meets the eye. I believe the meaning of life is to give life a meaning. Miss Cathy, I hope you find an honest path after this, and if I ever catch you again, I won't be so lenient next time.”
The detective smiled at everyone and announced, “Show's over people. Go back to your tables and enjoy your dinner!” With that, the detective left the restaurant with his officers.
Cathy got up from the cellar floor and apologized profusely to Ramondo for disrupting his work. Ramondo smiled back, said that he has already forgiven her and wished her the best. He then went back to attending to his customers.
Kiky gently took Cathy by her arm, picked up the crate of wine and said, “This will be my treat. Call your children and get them to come over to this restaurant too. I'm sure they have not enjoyed a hot, hearty meal in a long time. Oh and by the way, I'll be happy to offer you a position as a security guard in my company, with your experience and those deadly claws, you will definitely be great at keeping trespassers away.”
Ever since then, Cathy and Kiky became firm friends. That very night, Cathy's late husband appeared in her dream wearing a Chinese vampire costume.
“Hi darling,” Brad the bear chirped happily to Cathy in her sleep. “Please do not be alarmed by my vampire costume. I just donned this on because I thought you might appreciate the humor. I'm just here to say that I love you very much and thank you for taking care of the kids for me in my absence. I will see you again maybe 70 years later, till then, remember to live by my motto: 'Live. Laugh. Love.' I have always lived my life to the fullest and happiest even till the day I died pushing you out of the way of the oncoming bus. I have no regrets, and I will be waiting for you to join me here in the distant future. Goodnight my love, be happy.”
