You might have read our article yesterday about the
cruel dogfights organized in northern China. But where there are ruthless and cold-blooded degenerates, there are also kind people with hearts of gold like these five elderly women in China who have taken it upon themselves to feed almost 1,300 stray dogs daily.
These five women set up their very own dog sanctuary where hungry mongrels can seek food, shelter and even some basic grooming. The shelter, located in China's central Shaanxi Province was established in 2009 by 60-year-old Wang Yan Fang. She said that she felt sympathetic towards strays that were taken away by regulators to be cullled (or sold to restaurants or the fur industry), so she decided to apply for a permit to open the asylum, which is solely being supported by donations.
Since then, four other women have joined her in waking up at 4am every morning just to prepare food for the dogs. They are so dedicated to the cause that they even spent New Year's Even with the dogs instead of celebrating the night away with everyone else.
According to one of the ladies, the job comes with its own set of risks. The dogs are not always friendly – they sometimes bite their caretakers. But that has not deterred the women from continuing their service. “They’re like your children, you can’t bear to be apart from them, or to lose them,” Wang said.
These kind hearted women are not alone in China in lending these needy dogs a helping hand. A dew years ago, an animal lover, Ha Wen Jin, sold her house and all her worldly posessions to take care of 1,500 dogs and 200 cats. And there is also Grandma Bai, a 66-year-old womn from Chongqing, who has dedicated the last 17 years of her life to hundreds of stray dogs and cats.
